He was awarded a Government of Bulgaria scholarship in to study Structural Engineering at the Higher Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (now University of Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Geodesy), in Sofia, Bulgaria. He graduated, after six years, with a Master of Science in Structural Engineering and returned to Ghana and completed his national service at the National Service Secretariat in Accra. During the national service period, he was the project manager responsible for supervising the construction of KVIP latrines in the three northern regions. This posting enabled him to travel the width and breadth of the Northern and Upper East regions; witnessing the lack of opportunity for the youth. Professor Braimah joined the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory in 2004 and in short order became one of the world-recognized experts in blast load effects on critical infrastructure. At the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) he carried out research on explosion effects on critical infrastructure and systems and advised the Canadian government on infrastructure protection and safeguard of Canadian Government assets in Canada and abroad. His work at CERL earned him many awards.

Prof. Braimah later moved Carleton University to join a Four-member Committee to establish a world-class programme in Infrastructure Protection and International Security. This programme has since become a premier programme in Carleton University attracting students from Canada and across the world. He later became the director of the programme from 2017 to 2018.
