Department of sustainable agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) of Tamale Technical University brings together Crop, Soil, and Animal Scientists, Agricultural economists, Extensionists, and Natural Resource scientists with a primary focus on interdisciplinary activities in Agriculture and Natural Resource Development. The faculty consists of three departments namely;

  1. Department of Sustainable Agriculture
  2. Department of Agribusiness
  3. Department of Natural Resources Management with options in Agroforestry, Fisheries & Forestry

The Department of Sustainable Agriculture runs the following programmes

  1. Bachelor of Technology in Sustainable Agriculture (4 years)
  2. HND Tropical Agriculture (3 years)
  3. Diploma of Technology in Sustainable Agriculture (2 years)
  4. Certificate of Technology in General Agriculture (1 year)

 Aims and Objectives of the Programme

The main aim of the programmes under the Department of Sustainable Agriculture is to train students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for employment as professionals in the Agricultural sector and prepare students adequately to address the problems of agriculture facing Ghana and the world at large.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. Train students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in Agriculture,

aquaculture, agribusiness, and agricultural communication

  1. To acquire relevant scientific knowledge for research and development in agriculture

and the environment.

  1. Train students to design, develop and implement relevant agro-environmental

initiatives and processes for solving agricultural and agriculture problems.

  1. To prepare students with knowledge of food, nutrition, and income innovative

approaches and entrepreneurial skills in agriculture in order for them to set up their

own agribusinesses and marketing.

  1. Provide professional as well as academic progression path to higher education.
  2. Train students to acquire critical and analytical skills needed to perform professional

tasks along the agriculture value chain.

  1. Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Sustainable Agriculture

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMME

  1. Applicants with the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

Applicants must have credit passes (A1-C6) in English language, Mathematics, and Integrated science with additional passes in any three relevant elective subjects. The elective subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, General Agriculture, Horticulture, Biology, Agriculture Economics, and Extension.

  1. Applicants with Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)

Applicants must have Passes (A-D) in English language, Mathematics, and Integrated science with additional passes in any three relevant elective subjects. The elective subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Horticulture, Biology, General Agriculture, Agriculture Economics, and Extension, with a cumulative aggregate of 24 or better.

  1. Applicants with GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Certificates

Applicants must have six GCE O level passes including English Language, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Physics, or Chemistry.

2. Applicants with Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificates

  • Applicants with HND certificates in Agricultural-related programmes with at least 2nd Class (Lower Division) will be admitted at Level 300.
  • Applicants with an Advance Diploma certificate will be admitted at Level 300
  • Applicants with a Diploma certificate in relevant programmes would be admitted at Level 200.
  • Applicants with an Ordinary Technical Diploma (OTD) certificate would also be admitted at Level 200.
  1. Applicants with Agriculture Certificates
  2. Applicants with an Agriculture mechanic certificate
  3. Applicants with intermediate Agriculture certificate
  4. Applicants with Farm Institute certificate

Applicants from the above certificate programmes will be admitted into level 100.

  1. Mature Applicants

Applicants must be 25 years or more and must show proof of age with any of the following documents: Birth certificate, Ghana card, Baptismal certificate, ECOWAS identity card, Voter’s identity card or international passport.

Applicants must pass all subjects of the university mature students’ entrance examination.

Applicants with a significant number of years of relevant working experience may be required          to present his /her employment letter as evidence of working experience

2. Foreign Applicants

Applicants from foreign countries with equivalent entry requirement(s) will be considered after the evaluation and validation of certificates from (GTEC).

3. An applicant with Teacher Certificate

Applicants with a four-year certificate ‘A’ or three-year post-secondary teacher’s certificate in Agriculture Technology and its related areas will be admitted to level 200.

Students’ Admission, Progression, and Graduation

The duration of the Bachelor of Technology programme is four (4) years. The programme will create an opportunity for academic progression for numerous HND graduates of (Tropical Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, and other related fields as well as holders of diplomas in Agriculture). Graduates of the programme can progress through MTech, MPhil, MSc etc programmes to DTech or Ph.D. programmes.

 2.Higher National Diploma (HND) Tropical Agriculture

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN TROPICAL AGRICULTURE PROGRAMME

 Group A

  1. SSSCE/WASSCE Applicants: five (6) passes (A – D/A1 – D7) in core subjects including English Language and Core Mathematics and Integrated Science; three of the passes must be agriculture or science-related subjects as listed below with minimum grades of C/C6 respectively

Agricultural program

  • General agriculture

and one of the following (Animal Husbandry/ Crop Husbandry and Horticulture/Fisheries/Forestry) and two of the following (Biology, Physics Mathematics (Elective), Geography, Chemistry, and ICT (Elective)

General Science program

  1. b) General Science

ICT (Elective)

Group B

Entry Requirements for Mature Applicants:

Applicants who are 25 years and above but have not met the above-stated requirements are eligible to apply as mature candidates. In addition, such applicants:

  1. Must pass a written examination and an interview to be conducted by the University.
  • Must provide evidence of at least two (2) years’ work experience.
  1. Must provide a Birth Certificate at the interview.

Students’ Admission, Progression, and Graduation

The duration of the Higher National Diploma of Technology in Tropical Agriculture program is a three (3) year programme. The programme will create an opportunity for academic progression for numerous Senior High and Technical School students who have successfully completed and studied General Agriculture and related field. HND graduates of Tropical Agriculture can progress through BTech, BSc. or any other related bachelor programme starting from level 300.

  1. Diploma of Technology (DTech) in Sustainable Agriculture

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DIPLOMA OF TECHNOLOGY IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE PROGRAMME

 Group A

  1. SSSCE/WASSCE Applicants: five (5) passes (A – D/A1 – E8) in all subjects including English Language and Core Mathematics and Integrated Science; two of the passes must be agriculture or science-related subjects as listed below with minimum grades of D/E8 respectively

  1. Certificate of Technology (CTA) in Agriculture

 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. SSSCE/WASSCE Applicants: Minimum of three (3) passes (A – D/A1 – E8) in any subject. The three passes may be core or elective subjects in any subject area with minimum grades of E8:
  1. GCE Advanced Level Candidates: Passes in two (2) relevant subjects.
  • Technical School (Certificate II) Applicants (NABPTEX &TEU): Applicants must have three (3) passes.
  1. Entry Requirements for Mature Applicants:

Applicants who have evidence of completing school at Advance or Technical programmes, GCE ‘O’ Level, GCE “A” Level, WASSCE/SSSCE, Teachers’ certificate or any recognized education and obtained the age of 25 years and above but have not met the above-stated requirements are eligible to apply as mature candidates. In addition, such applicants:

  • Must pass a written examination and an interview to be conducted by the University.
  • Must provide evidence of at least two (2) years’ work experience.
  1. Must provide a Birth Certificate at the interview.

Students’ Admission, Progression, and Graduation

 The duration of the Certificate of Technology programme in Agriculture is one (1) academic year, which is structured into two (2) semesters.

Graduates of the Certificate of Technology in Agriculture can be admitted at level 200 of the Diploma or HND programme or at level 100 of a Bachelor’s programme

Employment opportunities

 Upon successful completion and depending on the type of programme, graduates can be employed in a wide range of sectors. These include but are not limited to;

  • Government Agencies, Ministries, and Departments e.g. Ministry of food and Agriculture, forestry commission, etc.
  • Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies
  • Educational institutions (as Teachers, Instructors Technicians, and Laboratory Officers)
  • Research Institutions
  • International Development agencies etc. CIDA, JICA, DANIDA, GIZ etc.
  • Private sector industries, food processors, exports and imports food and agro-inputs etc.
  • Financial Institutions eg Banks, Credit organizations, and Community grain banks under the 1 district 1 warehouse project.
  • Agro-based NGOs and Farmer Based Organizations
  • Entrepreneurs (self-employed as farmers, agriculture input dealers, and agrochemical dealers,)
  • Security agencies, e.g., Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, etc.
