Tatu establishes new Data Science Lab- Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis – LISA
Post Date: November 28 2021
Tamale Technical University (TaTU) establishes a new Data Science Lab known as the TaTU Data Science Lab. The Lab is now the 29th full member of the global Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis–LISA 2020 Network with the mission to:
- Train statisticians and data scientists to become effective interdisciplinary collaborators who can move between theory and practice to solve problems for real-world impact
- Serve as research infrastructure for researchers and decision-makers to collaborate with statisticians and data scientists to enable and accelerate research and data-based decisions that make a positive impact on society
- Teach short courses and workshops to improve statistical skills and data literacy widely.
Under the Directorship of Prof. Bashiru Imoro Ibn Saeed, the TaTU Data Science Lab is committed to being a centre for building statistically sound and scientifically solid foundation for the analysis and interpretation of data, as well as improving quantitative literacy among stakeholders. The goal of the Lab by 2026 will be to train the next cohort of collaborative statisticians and data scientists who would serve as a foundation for the support of growth of local researchers, businesses, government, and NGOs.
Currently, the objectives of the Lab are to teach short courses, apply statistical computing and data mining to real-world problems in society and industry. It would also explore the creation of novel statistical and computational courses and methods for scalable statistical computing and modeling with complex data sets.
The Lab will provide regular support to faculty and students engaged in research and teaching of other hands-on practical computing areas to students.
