Background

Down the corridors of time, Statistics has been an indispensable tool in policy and decision-making. It is used in the monitoring and evaluation of strategies and programmes designed to accelerate meaningful and sustainable development. If ever there was a time when Statisticians were needed in our country to make the necessary significant contributions to national development, that time is now.

There is an ever-increasing awareness of the fact that statisticians are critically need in both developed and developing countries. Their role is to collect, collate, process, analyses and disseminate data, and to address the challenging developmental programmes and processes. This is because decision-making needed to accelerate development is greatly dependent on empirical data, such data is needed to facilitate the crucial task of planning programs designed to improve human welfare.

However, these exists only a few statistical training institutions in Ghana for the training of the much-needed professional statisticians and this has depended the feeling that Ghana must make the optimum use of the few institutions that it has. However, the institutions must be dynamic enough to respond to the fast-ever-changing landscape of relevant developmental challenges of our time.

Vision

The vision of the Department is to become an internationally reputable faculty of excellences in the provision of professionally trained statisticians with the requisite knowledge, skills and competence to drive development planning and monitoring of the effects of development policies using statistics in an emerging economy setting.
