Core Activities

The core activities of the department include;

  • Transfer of basic ICT skills and literacy to all students of the technical university.
  • Transfer of intermediate and high-level industry-required skills to students specialising in ICT.
  • Building capacities of staff and faculty of the technical university in relevant areas of technology.
  • Raising awareness of the potential of technology among members of the university community through students and staff outreach programmes and fora.

Achievements

Having successfully combined academic and technical roles of the technical university since its inception in 1992, the Computer Science Department in 2012, successfully birthed the ICT Directorate as an outcome of the implementation of the ICT Policy and ICT Master Plan authored by the department. There continue to be strong collaborations between the two entities; the department now concentrates on teaching and research while the directorate focuses on rendering technical services to the school.

The department also successfully gained accreditation to roll out a three (3) year HND in ICT programme in 2013, four (4) year BTECH in IT and four (4) year BTECH in Multimedia Computing in 2021. Also, the department offer both Diploma and Certificate programs in IT and GIS. In an era when tertiary institutions and their departments thereof, suffer declining numbers in enrolment figures, the

department continues to enjoy consistent admission figures year on year. We believe it is because the quality of our products testifies to the prospective applicant community that there is a lot to learn/gain by pursuing the Programme.

From the student front, it was the Computer Science Department that introduced the technical university to electronic voting by successfully developing, for the SRC, an electronic platform for elections management. In the 2016/17 academic year, students of the department took it a notch higher and developed a system of voting that takes away the queues by allowing voters to vote from their own wireless enabled devices. It worked successfully. The department is ready to collaborate with other entities to implement a similar system on their behalf.
