The management of Tamale Technical University in collaboration with the Fashion design and Technology department launch the 7th annual exhibition on the theme: “Gilts and Glamour” on November 3,2022. Fashion and appearance is one of the important element in our daily outlook. It is the armor to survive the reality of life and it deems fit to keep up with trends. As part of their curriculum, the final year students showcased their skills and knowledge in diverse creative ways. Some items displayed were tye and dye fabrics, smock fabrics, heels, bags, beads, school uniform, hats, dresses of different shapes and colours, kaftans and many more.
The Chairperson for programme, Mrs. Wilhemina Alkaku, the CEO of Picorna Hotel stated that, acquiring skills in this era makes one resourceful, and therefore encouraged the students of Fashion design and Technology Department to never look down upon themselves since it sets the pace for entrepreneurship. She further added that as fashion designers they must be time conscious in order to deliver on time for their prospective customers.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Vice Chancellor of the University congratulated the final year students for good work done and encouraged them to be more creative, consistent, quick, knowing the preference of their customers as well as evolving around time and place in order to position themselves for good investors. looking at the showcase of skills and knowledge, indeed the theme “Glits and Glamour” befits the exhibition. He also called on the graduands to be employers rather than employees with the new skills acquired, he also added that they should collaborate with each other to further sharpened their skills since skills are complementary.
The Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Technology, Dr. Joana Akweley Zanu expressed her gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, staff and students for making the exhibition a reality. she added that exhibition and graduation set a chapter for discovery and with the skills acquired from the University, she believes the students are well equipped for the job market. She added that they should set their minds to contribute their quota to economic growth both local and global. She further indicated an emerging menace in Ghana described as the Fashion Cemetery, due to the influx of second-hand clothing of which about forty (40%) percent poorly made end up in mountainous cemetery and it is gradually becoming an ecological nightmare. This suggests that a lot is required to be done in achieving strictly sustainable textiles and apparel that are eco- friendly.
