The Governing Council of Tamale Technical University has promoted Dr. Askia Musah Mohammed to the rank of Associate Professor of Soil Science, effective from 18th September, 2023. This was approved at a Special Meeting of the Governing Council held on 11th October, 2024 at the Auditorium of the John Evans Attah Mills Block, where the recommendation of the University Appointments and Promotions Board was considered.
Until his promotion, Prof. Askia Musah Mohammed, was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sustainable Agriculture in the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Tamale Technical University. Prof. Askia Musah Mohammed is a well-known soil scientist with extensive experience in research and training, focusing on plant litter decomposition, nutrient and C dynamics in soils, integrated soil fertility management, soil-plant analysis and the 4R fertilizer use principles. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Soil Science from the University of Reading, in the United Kingdom, awarded in 2014; and a Master of Philosophy in Soil Science from the University of Ghana in 2008. He is affable, ingenious and hard-working.
Prof. Askia Musah Mohammed was appointed a Senior Lecturer at Tamale Technical University in 2021. He was later appointed, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources from 2021-2023. He is the current Director of the Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Research in TaTU. Before joining TaTU, he was a Senior Research Scientist with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research at Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-SARI) from 2001 to 2021. At the CSIR-SARI, he served in many leadership roles including the head of the Soil Chemistry Section (2008 – 2010, & 2014 – 2021), a member of the Internal Management Committee of CSIR-SARI from 2019 to 2021, and the Divisional Head of the Northern Region Farming Systems Research Group (2019 – 2021) responsible for generating improved farming technologies and innovations to improve the farmers’ livelihoods.
Prof. Askia Musah Mohammed has been instrumental in the spirited growth of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Under his leadership as Dean of the Faculty, he pioneered the introduction of many new industry-driven programs which increased departmental enrollments. He is credited for the prevailing cordial relationship between Lecturers and students and among Lecturers, a mark of his leadership peculiarity. His remarkable contribution to strengthening institutional linkages and collaborations for the university cannot be underrated. He has served on various committees contributing his valuable experiences in developing the university, some of which include, the Staff Development and Scholarships Committee, University Examinations Board, Academic Affairs Committee, and the Graduate School Board.
As a seasoned Academic, Prof. Askia Musah Mohammed has mentored and supervised many next-generation scholars, who see him as a role model. He has published extensively in many reputable Journals and his work has contributed tremendously to improving food security and livelihoods in northern Ghana. Through hard work, he is providing consulting services to many institutions. He serves as a reviewer to many Journals including, the Asian Research Journal of Agriculture and the International Journal of Plant and Soil Science. He has received many awards for his illustrious services to humanity.
