SOs HERMAN GMIENNER STUDENTS EXPLORE TAMALE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY’S INNOVATIVE DEPARTMENTS


A group of enthusiastic students from SOs Herman Gmienner, visited Tamale Technical University (TaTU) on Monday, October 27, 2025 to gain first-hand experience of university life and explore the exciting academic programs offered by the institution.

The educational tour took the young learners through some of the university’s key departments, including the Textile Department, Hospitality and Catering Management Department, and the Engineering Department. The visit formed part of an outreach initiative designed to expose younger students to technical and vocational education pathways and inspire their future career choices.

At the Textile Department, students had the opportunity to observe practical demonstrations of fabric design, dyeing, and weaving. The Head of Department, Prof. Aziz Dana and some student guides explained how traditional Ghanaian textile techniques are being blended with modern technology to create innovative designs that preserve cultural heritage while meeting contemporary fashion demands.

Moving to the Hospitality and Catering Management Department, the students were treated to a hands-on experience in food preparation, event management, and hospitality services. The aroma from the training kitchen drew smiles from students, who watched in fascination as one of the lecturer, Mr. Ganiu at the department, demonstrated how creativity and discipline are combined in professional catering.

The final stop was the Engineering Department, where students’ toured workshops and laboratories equipped with modern tools for mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering training. Many were thrilled to see lots of engines, and technical projects designed and built by TaTU students. Lecturers encouraged the students to cultivate curiosity and problem-solving skills, noting that engineering remains a key driver of national development.

Speaking during the visit, facilitators of the students emphasized the importance of such outreach programs in promoting technical and vocational education.  “We believe it’s never too early to inspire young minds. This visit helps students see the practical side of education and understand how what they learn in school connects to real-life careers,” they added. The event also provided an opportunity for Tamale Technical University to showcase its diverse academic offerings and facilities to the public. During the visit, lecturers highlighted ongoing efforts to expand access to quality technical education and to prepare graduates who are ready to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s growing economy, inspiring the students a clearer picture of the opportunities that await them in higher education and a new dream of one day studying at Tamale Technical University.
