The Hospitality and Tourism Management Department of Tamale Technical University started in the 2002 academic year with just 12 students who were largely females and mostly were holders of the cookery for the catering industry part I and II. The in the initial stages the programme struggle to get students enrolled to it for several years until in 20015 when the number of students started going up. The department was formally known as Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management (HCIM) and was housing two programmes-HND Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management and Intermediate Cookery.
In 2015, the University aligned its programmes and HND Tourism Management was moved to the department. The department was consequently renamed as Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM). Over the years the department has grown exponentially in terms of programmes and student enrollment. The department currently runs a four-year Bachelor of Technology; two-year top-up degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management, HND Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management and HND in Tourism Management; Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management as well as Certificate Programmes. The department have collaborations with leading hospitality and tourism organisations in the country for the purpose of practical training, internship placements, and research and capacity building.
Currently, the department has over 700 students and 14 members of staff who are well vested in the areas of hospitality and tourism management. The programmes of the department are among the most sought after programmes in Tamale Technical University. The department can also boast of the first female Professor in the history of Tamale Technical University. It is worthy of mentioning that the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department has submitted a proposal to Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to mount a Master of Technology (M-Tech) Programme in Hospitality and Tourism Management with options in Hospitality and Catering Technology and Tourism Management.
