In the year 2010 The Tamale Polytechnic now Tamale Technical University, recognizing the need to spread it tentacles within and external institutions for mutual benefit, recommended that there be an Institutional Collaboration Unit/Directorate to coordinate since the University has benefited from external relationships and has had a few institutional collaborations and still yearns to have more vibrant ones. The University hoped that this would spell out the levels of involvement of identified stakeholders in constructing partnership between the University and other institutions/organizations. A four-member committee led by the Director of Institutional Collaborations was therefore tasked to work out a policy document in that regard. This saw the birth of International Programs and Institutional Collaboration initially called External Collaboration
