TAMALE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY HOLDS ORIENTATION RETREAT FOR ITS GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMBERS

The Governing Council of the Tamale Technical University (TaTU) on Thursday 24th February, 2022 held an orientation retreat at the Global Dream Hotel in Tamale.
The Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr.Alhassan E. Abdulai, in his remarks to the members of the Council appealed to them to fully consider this long awaited training program as relevant to the effective functioning of the Council of the University. He anticipated that the orientation would truly highlight the functions and responsibilities of the Council.

Dr. Paul Effah, a former Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education(NCTE) now GTEC opened the session as the Key Resource Person for the program. The Resource Person took the participants through the basics of Higher Education in Ghana and the actual business of a Governing Council of a university. He detailed out the core reasons why universities are established and how fast tertiary education around the globe is changing. As such, it takes a smart approach to address the challenges of tertiary education in the world.

The orientation further highlighted the core responsibilities of individual Council members and the high ethical standards they need to meet.
The Facilitator added that Confidentiality and team building would enhance the work of the council and members were entreated to avoid conflict of interest situations when dealing with council matters.

He also strongly advised council members to desist from interfering in the day-to-day administration of the University and also desist from requesting needless favors from the University Management. He encouraged the council to always resort to dialogue in resolving crisis. Dr Effah added that members should cultivate the habit of learning to enhance their appreciation of the nuances of higher education board of the university. He concluded the presentation by reminding the Chairman of the Governing Council, Vice Chancellor and the Registrar to continue to have good working relationship for effective and efficient running of the university.
The orientation was fully participated by all the twenty two (22) council members of the University.

In his closing remarks, the Chairman of the Governing Council expressed the need for similar training workshop to be carried out for various interest groups within the University Community.
