Prof. Ahmed Tijani Bawah

Prof. Ahmed Tijani Bawah is the Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tamale Technical University, Tamale, Ghana. He is also a Senior Lecturer of Chemical Pathology at the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology, Faculty of Allied Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prior to this, he worked at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana, where he held various academic leadership positions. He previously worked as a Laboratory Manager at the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health, Ghana.

Prof. Bawah is a fellow of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, a registered Allied Health Professional, and a fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (FWAPCMLS). He is also a member of the Clinical Chemistry Society of Ghana and serves as a consultant Chemical Pathologist with extensive years of professional working experience.

Work & Academic Experience

Prof. Bawah practiced as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in various health facilities in the Greater Accra region for over a decade, rising to the rank of Principal Biomedical Laboratory Scientist within the Ghana Health Service before transitioning to academia full-time in 2013.

As an educator, he has spent years developing curricula for both undergraduate and postgraduate training programs. Notably, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was among the eminent scientists tasked to coordinate testing operations at the UHAS COVID-19 Laboratory, rolling out a critical testing regime responsible for tracking cases across the Volta, Oti, Eastern, and parts of the Greater Accra regions.

Prof. Bawah was highly instrumental in setting up the Faculty of Allied Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Tamale Technical University and became its foundation Dean. Within TaTU, he serves on numerous strategic institutional boards and committees:

Research Interests & Outputs

Prof. Bawah’s primary area of research focus is metabolic complications during pregnancy, with an emphasis on using biochemical markers in the prediction of obstetric outcomes. He also conducts deep clinical research into diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney diseases.

• Over 47 publications in peer-reviewed journals with close to 1000 academic citations.
• Collaborator and primary data contributor to the Gestational Weight Gain Pooling Project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
• Key published research papers include: Lipid profiles of Ghanaian women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Hypogonadism in Ghanaian men with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Adipokine deregulations in Preeclampsia, and the effects of tobacco smoking on semen quality.
